This is an Antique Scottish Mauchline Lighthouse Figural Needle Case with an illustration of Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria, England.

At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.

At that time, this was one of two needle cases being listed, and wehad a variety ofother antique Mauchline ware items, all purchased on the most recent, oron prior trips to England, and at the time of the original listing, we still have Mauchline ware items to list from our most recent trip. We also have a large variety of other woodenware / treen items from the most recent and from prior trips.

Mauchline ware, made in Mauchline, Scotland for many decades, was made in an amazing variety of form and function as souvenir pieces commissioned for a multitude of venues worldwide. Most Mauchline ware items were made from indiginous sycamore, a close grained hardware, and that appears to be the wood from which this item is made.

Bowness in on the Windermere River near the west coast of Northern England.

The wikipedia article on Bowness-on-Windermere includes:

\"Bowness-on-Windermereis a town inSouth Lakeland,Cumbria, England. Due to its position on the banks ofWindermere, the town has become a touristhoneypot.\"

\'Bowness\' (originally \'Bulnes\') means \" \'the headland where the bull grazes\', from the Old English \'bula\', \'bull\' and Ole English \'næss\' \'headland\', perhaps referring to the keeping of the parish bull.\"[2]The \'on-Windermere\' part was added later (found on the Ordnance Survey map of 1899), presumably to distinguish this \'Bowness\' from other Cumbrian ones.

\"During the 19th century, Bowness grew from a small fishing village to a town living almost entirely off tourism and holiday homes. It was the centre of the boat-building industry that provided the sailing yachts, rowing boats and steam launches used on the lake. A large number of hotels and boarding houses gave employment to the permanent population of the town.\"

We were not able to find out the age of the needle case for sure. I think it is likely over 100 years old. In any case, explicitly designates sewing items from 1930 or before as \"antique\" since the relevant categories forsewing are Antiques->Sewing (pre-1930) and Collectibles->Sewing (1930-).

The photos are closeups. The case is 4\"tall and with a 1 3/4\" diameter base. You can see the length along a ruler in one of the photos.

Condition

Thecase is in very condition with a few very minor scuffs, one on the image, but seen only on very close inspection, and a lot of wear on the black paper or similar covering on the bottom. The press-fit lid fits securely.
