9½“ dia, c. 1804.

Fine portrait ofMadame [Marie Jeanne] Du Barry painted in color enamels signed by hand in brown“O Brun”. Shaped pink painted rim banded with characteristically Sevresalternating burnished & matt gilt edge. The rim has elaborate gilt decoration.

Mark of the FirstEmpire on the reverse “M. Imple. De Sevres” with date code for 1804 in red. Tardy,Les Porcelaines Francaises, (1981), p. 481. By hand portrait name in brown.

Under the Empirethe factory came under the direction of Brongniart, and the old soft pasteporcelain ceased to be made in favor of his new hard paste formula. 1804 is thefirst year in its history that Sevres made only hard-paste. The present piececomes from this year of the early Empire and bears a fine quality painted portraitof Louis XV’s mistress, who “ruled” the French Court from 1769 to 1774 and wasarrested by Robespierre & guillotined in 1793.

Underside edge small chipwhich does not affect the surface, otherwise no damage of any kind. No cracks,hairlines or repairs.
