Wonderful bookends depicting a bust of The Bard in a decorative alcove, the top of which presents a tableaux of Greek accomplishment - music, study of a globe (Pompeian used this same tableaux on other pieces).Bronze-clad, a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster form through the process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze yet still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC at least as early as about 1920. These pieces are marked on their backs with Pompeian\'s name as well as a stock number, 118.Interesting (to me, at least) is that in my original Pompeian Bronze catalogue, this Shakespeare set had the stock number 116 (see my last pic). But note also that the designs are not identical: mine has \"Shakespeare\" formed into the backs; the catalogue\'s image shows \"Shakespeare\" formed into the front of the base. Condition is fine. No breaks in the cladding. A few dented corners (on the piece on the left, top front corners are the \"worst\") and some nicks here and there. But Will\'s noses and beard points remain unmashed. Paint is original with some minor chipping of the blue, and then general wear and discoloration on the gold from age and use. Please know that the flash of my camera makes the colors (especially the gold) brighter than they truly are. Both pieces sit flat and stable.7 inches tall; 4 1/2 inches side to side; 3 1/4 inches front to back. And heavy: one pieces weighs in at 3 1/2 pounds; the other, 4 pounds.Perfect gift for the lover of Shakespeare\'s works (Mark Twain believed Francis Bacon wrote them) or the Bottom in your family.US shipping only. USPS priority. I pack with care.I SPECIALIZE IN ANTIQUE BOOKENDS AND DECORATIVE OBJECTS. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR INTERESTING AND UNUSUAL ITEMS.
