ANTIQUE SHAOHSING INDUSTRIAL MISSION DOLL FAMILY ON THE ORIGINAL CARD 1930\'S :
$79.99

Rare set of Chinese mission dolls attached by thread to their original 6 inch heavy paper card. The family of five includes father, mother and three children. They have hand painted silk faces, cloth wire wrapped hands, and cotton clothing with embroidered decorative slippers and trimmings. Both the father and mother doll measure 3 inches tall, with the 2 children measuring 2 inches and the tiny baby at 1 1/4 inches tall. The back of the card is addressed to Rina Morison from Carolyn Sewall, missionary to China, and dated 1937. Research online has mentioned Carolyn Sewall and the Shaohsing Industrial Mission in several books on the subject of raising money for the poor and the spreading of Christianity in China. There is also mention of Ms. Sewall and other missionaries in historical manuscripts found at the Yale University Library. The front of the card has an old mailing address of Mrs. William Russell, Kensington, Ct. Mrs. Russell was a well known philanthropist in the central Ct. area many years ago. The dolls are in excellent estate condition, the silk faces are clean and their clothing remains bright and colorful. The paper card has a couple small light bends from long time storage. They would look wonderful in a shadowbox frame.
