Antique Bronze Ayutthaya Period Standing Buddha, Sukhothai Influence. Mid 17th C. Thailand

Description: An exquisite 17th century Ayutthaya Standing Buddha of Copper alloy composition, recovered from a temple ruin of northern Thailand, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved with exacting detail, repaired, and presented on an old teak wood pedestal, measuring 12.75 inches in height. Images of Ayutthaya period typical display influences of Lopburi, Uthong, and Sukhothai periods, which assist in determining their respective style and age. XXX A spiritual image of Buddha portrayed standing in a frontal position of samabhanga, with the right raised in \'abhayamuda\', the gesture of reassurance, while the left hand rest in a precise and similar gesture at his side. XXX The image displays the influence of the previous Sukhothai period, modeled with broad shoulders, inflated chest, and a narrow waist, wearing a long sanghati robe in the \'Open Mode\' worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the end fold draped to his mid-section and marked with a fish-tail notch. The full length garment is gracefully flared outward as in Lopburi images, and is draped by a central panel, finely incised, and extending down to the bottom hem.XXX The face is oval bearing Sukhothai influence where hair curls of the head dip into the middle of the forehead to form a heart shape, downcast eyes are slit, set beneath curved incised eyebrows, a urna, an aquiline nose, wide mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated semi-pierced earlobes stop short of the shoulders. The head is cover by pin hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed \'Ushnisha\', rising to a tall flame-like Halo, representiing the Buddha\'s spiritual energy.XXX Solid cast in the lost wax method, the bronze is of 90% copper alloy composition, with the surface having a naturally aged chocolate brown patina, with green malachite developing throughout, and exposed areas of the copper from being positioned in a reclined state for years until a later modification was made. The piece underwent old restoration work notably on the images broked legs, which are attached to the base with brazed bronze rods.

Data Observation: Excellent condition, beautifully displayed, with both legs broken, with a previous repair and modified teakwood base. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
