Description: A rare Ochre-Decorated Stoneware Jug with brushed Floral Decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, Bennington, Vermont, 1830’s. A successful, Highly-Ovoid wheel thrown form with tooled spout and applied strap handle. Impressed on the shoulder: L. NORTON & SON. This particular mark was used between 1833-1841 by Luman (Sr.) and his son (Julius) at their East (aka “Old”) Bennington kiln. See Internet for further information.

Front features a stylized Orchid or Tulip in refreshingly uncommon Ochre Slip. The stems on these early Norton florals were always razor thin, and the one on is ovoid is just barely visible.

Condition: This Norton Ovoid survives in Very Good to Excellent, essentially as-made undamaged condition with typical base wear consistent with age, use and handling. Inherent surface, glaze and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy. The rim and mouth look pretty close to perfect. No chips, cracks, repaired damage, restoration work or other excuses. There is on this Keeper; place your offers early to avoid a last-minute disappointments.
