Here is an OUTSTANDING gilt bronze wall plaque roundel in a period hardwood lathe turned frame..looks like Teak or Mahogany.. you will be able to google this particular classical scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the Cherubim ( Angel ) which is the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden.... you will find very similar castings and impressions of this particular scene.. be assured this is not flimsy metal, its not resin, its not porcelain, its not sheet metal repousse, its not spelter or latten or lead... its SOLID CAST BRONZE which has been GILT... the attention to detail on the casting is very fine.
Look close at the border edge of this example..the others you will see on google do NOT have this extra border......this is not seperate cast.. its all cast as one.... it has the extra raised circles and the Viking JELLING Style design of entwined beasts......with spaces for a top and bottom... so its been designed like this.... when originally cast.
As far as I can see it has no makers marks or foundry - sculptors marks.
It is really fabulous deep relief too.. its not flat.
It is probably French and would have been made for some Palace or rich aristocratic English family to hang in their Country House.
The edge is not flat either... it is held into the wood frame with simple brass round headed screws... I decided just now to take the screws out and LOOK at the back myself.
It is MASSIVE and HEAVY ... weighing a staggering 5 kilos...just over actually.
The gilding goes over the edge and just onto the back to about 1/4 of an inch... it has verdi gris - bronze patina coming thru in places...you can see some actually between Adam & Eve... and the side of Eve\'s bare body is slightly discoloured where the gilding has began to wear off with folks touching it.
The back also has a circular depression in the centre probably from being made.. as well as the usual cast marks that are air bubbles etc. etc.
Also on the back it has been tested in 2 places to see what it is made from... had it been Solid GOLD it would have been worth a pretty penny or two ! alas its not.. it is gilt bronze.
It is slightly convex too.... made like this to show the relief off better at the front and concave at the back.
French about 1890 - Art Nouveau ...maybe someone can tell exactly by the Viking entwined Beasts design around the border.
It is beautiful.

Without the wooden frame the bronze plaque is 11 and a quarter inch dia x 3/8ths inch deep edge x nearly 1 inch deep relief in places...... it weighs just over 5 kilograms ... the wooden frame is 15 and a quarter inch dia x nearly 1 and half inch deep..... there is glue residue under the plauq on the wood but non on the bronze plaque. ..its simply held in place by 6 short brass round headed screws.. which are only 3/8ths inch long.
The wooden frame does have a natural crack appearing at the left hand side.. from drying out.. I actually do not really like the way its been held in place in this frame.. it needs something more substantial really as 5 kilos of bronze falling out of the frame whilst it being hung on a wall somewhere would not be too good for anything under it.. such as a console table and a Ming vase.....so I will be sending the frame with it.. but the plaque NEEDS better fixings in my opinion... this is MINOR detail of course to the right buyer.
