You are offerding on a SUPERB CONDITION Civil War era Model 1850 US cavalry sword. This sword has the mark of \" W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS\" which means it was made between 1843-1863 when the company had this stamp. HORSTMANN was a large Civil War supplier and this particular sword was manufactured by them from parts imported from Germany. Page 215 from the book \"Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers\" by Thillmann describe these as type 3 swords made from German parts entirely, and the sword is of very high quality with beautiful lines and well made. The scabbard still has the stamp of the original maker S&K which stand for Schnitzler & Kirschbaum. The sword is solid and in great condition, there are some dark spots on the blade created by cosmoline residue that will clean easily if desired. The wire is there no nicks no pitting overall very nice sword made during the Civil War giving that is type 3. The sword is 41.75 inches from which the blade is 36 inches. Great Civil War era sword.
