Antique Silk Satin Gown, with jet beaded panne silk bodicetrim & lace cuffs

cica 1880

Description andDesign:The silhouette and design of this antique ensemble in black silk satin &lavender velvet have all of the hallmarks of the dynamic shift fashion took inthe early 1880’s with its exaggeration and amplifiedornamentation. This ensemble includes a matching bodice blouse &bustle skirt. Design & conditiondetails as well as measurements for each piece are below.

Thebodiceblouseis fitted, bonedand fully lined in a soft printed cotton;the lining of the sleeves is a dark brown cotton. There are somesweet details on this piece like the scalloped pink satin trim along the edgesof the sheathed bones in the lining. Theupper portions of the blouse are trimmed in lavender silk velvet elaborately beadedin faceted jet (black glass). The velvetis applied on top of the satin. Thevelvet collar is sectioned and can be shaped with the beaded wire edging. The long full sleeves have ornate shoulderswith modified bows. The cuffs aretrimmed in velvet with an overlay of silk lace in cream. The entire piece closes in the front with along series of metal hooks & eyes—the top eye may be fabric, or absent. All other closures appear to be present. The satin is pleated in the front giving theblouse a soft full look. The longtapered waistline fans out in the back with 3 modified bows lying nicely overthe bustle.

The fullskirthasa flat front, is semi - fitted through the hips, is fully lined in polishedcotton and lengthens 2.5” front to back. It has a beautifully finishedwide waistband, is pleated at the hips and back and has a placket closure with2 metal hooks & eyes (one of the hooks could be secured more tightly). There are at least 2 large brass eyes alongthe waistband to secure the bodice to the skirt with their hook-mates insidethe waistline of the bodice. I’vepresented the skirt here with a rather pronounced bustle, but a smaller one maygive this skirt a short train (a consideration).Inside the hemlinefeatures a thick band of velvet giving the piece added weight (picture 12 showsthe skirt inside out).

Condition: Overall this lovely ensemble is in very good to excellentcondition(please refer to my termsbelow).I noted thefollowing condition issues which are largely detailed in the pictures: thereis a small separation under the right arm—not in the armscye per se, but a bitlower on the upper sleeve’s underside—I imagine this was the result of movementor strain (see details in picture 11, both frames). The underarms are very clean indeed! There is some light discoloration on thevelvet and some faint discoloration on the printed cotton lining on the back. The beaded wire around the collar needs to besecured; very minor bead loss along the velvet trim of the back collar. There is a small scratch in the satin on thebody of the skirt (wholly masked by lining).I noted some faint lines on the skirt and below the right shoulder indicatingpossible exposure to light moisture/humidity(?)—these responded very well tobeing gently brushed with a fabric brush (no bristles—I was quite cautious hereas I didn’t want to alter the nap of the satin).

This antiqueensemble is a valuable piece of textile & social history, with so much tooffer in the way of further study, display, and enjoyment!!It willbe packaged and shipped with great consideration and care.
