Here is a really fabulous travelling Holy Communion set of 3 solid sterling silver items made by John Edward Bingham of Walker & Hall in Sheffield during 1890.
The box is mauve leather covered and has seen some action.. the leather is coming away on the edges and corners, its lost its brass inset from the lid top ... the push button works and the hinges are good.
The underside of the lid is a little wobbly and weak.
So open the lid and see the blue velvet lining ... this set has been taken and out of this box many times.. its well worn .. please do NOT let that put you off the 3 sterling silver items though as they are worthy of being collected or used as the case may be.
The set has the wafer plate in the lid.. held in position with the 4 little brass wings that turn around to hold it in place.
All the items you will see have the same engraved Star design with the IHS in the centre.. this is all very fine work.
The style of the chalice and wine decanter jug is very GOTHIC - MEDIEVAL looking... and really nice actually.
The hallmarks are Sheffield 1890 ..... 1889-90 on the Wine Jug and 1890-91 on the chalice and plate.
Maker is W&H - Walker & Hall with JEB - John Edward Bingham being the silversmith.

The silver stopper of the wine jug I couldnt get it fully out when I photographed it.. but now that I am describing it.. I have managed to get it out.. its fairly tight .. so do be carefull .... I can see it has a silver washer on the bottom and the bar thru the centre of the cork so in theory it will not be left in the jug top if you did pull it too hard.. its a really good idea and well thought about.... the cork is just over 1 inch long the silver CROSS part is extra stuck up just over half an inch.
The wafer plate is 3 and 3/4 inch dia x 3/8ths inch deep and it weighs approx.... 56.1grams.

The chalice is superb design with the knop centre stem and the design on the facetts.... it is nearly 3 and 3/4 inch tall x 2 inch dia base x 2 inch dia top rim and it weighs approx.....70.5grams.

The wine jug again has this wonderful pedestal like base and bulbous body with a shaped pedestal foot with a swirly handle and the Cross top cork stopper. It is 4 inch tall x 2 inch dia base x just over 2 inch dia body and its 2 and a quarter inch between the handle and the spout tip...it weighs approx....119grams.
It all fits in the tatty box which is 5 inch wide x 5 and a quarter inch x 3 and a quarter inch tall.
