This perfect English-made Victorian era brooch is crafted in solid 9k yellow gold w/ both matte and polished finishes. The English started using 9k gold to satisfy the rising middle class who wanted finer things that emulated the upper class but at a price that was still affordable. This elongated cartouche style brooch is typical of the Victorian aesthetic for jewelry with a decidedly geometric bent and decorated with fine granulation, wire work, raised plateaus, and petal details. The center of the brooch has three very fine old cut diamonds prong set in etched and recessed baskets totaling 0.15 carats. The back of the brooch has a rare detail with a framed panel and lens that can be removed for a lock of hair to be inserted. It was typical of this period to keep a small braid of hair to commemorate a living or deceased loved one. In the case of a couple, hair from both individuals were interwoven as a symbol of their eternal love & devotion to each other. Enjoy!
