Antique Victorian Ornate Silver Plate \"Cracker\" Handled Caddy. The word crackers is beautifully etched in the silver plate across the front along with etched fern leaves above and below the word crackers. This wonderful piece of antique Americana has detailed ornate workmanship and is seen from the floral handle, floral and beaded finial, graduated lid, beaded rim opening and 4 ornate short feet. An absolute fabulous antique piece to display and collect. Underside is stamped with Aurora Silver Plate Manufacturing maker\'s mark. Aurora Warranted Established 1869 102. This mark dates to being made between 1900 - 1919. It measures 9 1/2\" to top of handle, 7 1/2\" to top of finial, 6\" dia at widest, 4 1/2\" dia base and 4 1/2\" opening. Weight 1 lb. 7.1 oz. The condition is antique very good. The silver plate has darkened and minor silver plate loss. This is expected consistent with age but the etching is still very clear and visible. There is some old polish visible. We do not clean and disturb patina. There is one small minor dent that is felt more than seen at backside of the left side hinge. To see the size of this dent, it is seen in the photo of the inside of the caddy. The lid sits comfortably and evenly in the opening and the handle moves easily from front to back and is securely attached at the hinges. I have seen some of these cracker caddy\'s with a dome lid but this one has a graduated sections lid. I believe this to be the original lid. There is what I believe to be an owner\'s surname initial etched on the rear. See photos for detailed condition. This item will be carefully packaged for shipping. Thank you for your consideration.
Aurora Silver Plate Manufacturing Company was established in 1869 in Aurora, Illinois, formerly the Chicago Silver Plate Company of Chicago, Illinois. The Aurora Silver Plate Company was organized under charter from the Illinois Legislature in 1869. The company was active from 1869 until 1919 when the factory was purchased by the Mulholland Brothers. Mulholland Bros. then operated in Aurora until 1932. Many pieces of Aurora Silver Plate Ware is on Exhibit at the Aurora Historical Society.
