It was obliviously a well loved piece - the plating was gold but now with 150 years of age it\'s more of a weathered brass much like a lot of Victorian pieces of today. The chain measures 22 inches long and still has a secure spring clasp.

The locket itself also snap tight. Inside is a picture of the dearly beloved - dapper looking guy hat he was. There is ornately scrolled design surrounding the face of the locket. The backside of the cameo is a jet piece with the carved came attached with what I presume is a Gutta Percha material.

I am however by no means an expert in gutta percha. I have looked at the piece with a glass and the hair is very ornately carved as well as the face. Gutta percha was widely used during this time period.
