Little story about Black Jet
Jet is considered to be a minor gemstone since it is a geological material.It is not considered a true mineral, but rather a mineraloid as it is derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure. Unlike diamonds which are crystalline, jet is similar in structure to the tree from which it comes. As such, genuine jet may show the texture or grain of the wood itself if the piece has a flat surface, i.e., flat backs of brooches, pins.
Jet is soft as limestone and easy to carve. This characteristic also makes it susceptible to chips. If chipped, the damage will typically be shell shaped. Look for this damage along the edges
.Antique circa 1860s Civil War Period Black Jet /Gutta Percha picture frame with roses surrounded floral decoration and foliage. This picture frame is very detail and a lot of Victorian motifs.
Measurement is approx: 9\" T x 6.7\"W and the viewing part is 3.7\" W x 5.3\"L.
There is a loop on the back for hanging on wall. Excellent antique condition with several surface scratches (please view photos), the metal back that holds a picture in place had an easel and it looks like easel little out of shape on the top part (see my photos). Frame come without a front glass, fabric background is partially faded on the edges, four glue marks on the fabric from previous owner photo? (see my photos)
