Antique Victorian FOLDING WOOD CHAIR by E. W. VAILL Original Carpet Seat :
$119.50

I am selling an American, Victorian Era, wooden folding chair with carpet/tapestry seat, made in Worcester, Massachusetts in the 1870s. The black finish and fabric are original and this piece has not been restored. This New England antique chair has its original paper label under the front of the seat (see photo) which identifies the manufacturer as E. W. VAILL, and indicates this chair style was made from January 6, 1863, during the Civil War, and reissued May 17,1870 and is style No. 9. Many people refer to these chairs as Civil War Campaign Folding Chairs and they are very light and portable and very sturdy. This chair is 28 1/2 inches tall when it is in sitting position, 34 inches tall when folded in storage position. It is 14 3/4 inches wide at the front of the seat (measuring from outside the wooden dowel) and 15 1/2 inches wide at the back of the seat and 13 inches deep measured from the front to back of the carpet seat. It has round ball finials with a brass tack on the top (for storing upside down), a ladder back construction of 3 gracefully curved slats as a back rest and turned wood spindles that connect the front legs and back legs making this a stable design. The woven light brown carpet/tapestry seat has a red medallion in the center and is secured to the wood frame with numerous tacks or upholstery nails (see photos). The surface of the wood has small dents and scratches and the finish is rubbed in well worn places such as the \"thumb print area\" on the back of the top slat of the chair where it was picked up and used over the last 130+ years (see photo). The wood that shows under the black paint is medium to dark brown and since other chairs by E. W. Vaill are made of walnut this one may be also. The chair shows very well and some people use them to display other antiques such as dolls or stuffed animals. I purchased this chair in Oregon from an antique dealer\'s estate about 20 years ago and it has since been kept in a smoke free, pet free home since that time. A nice looking small antique chair in its original condition.
