Antique Victorian Scottish Agate Brooch….

This is a fabulous large oval brooch set with a wonderfullyswirling piece of banded agate with shades of browns and whites. It is set in asolid stamped patterned frame made from Pinchbeck.

The Agate is highly polished and in excellent condition withno fractures or hairlines, just some surface scratches commensurate with age.

The whole brooch is in fabulous condition.

It has a steel pin that extends well beyond the C claspindicating an earlier brooch – I would date it to around 1850.

Size: 2 ¼” (5.5cm) x 1 ¾” (4.5cm)

Scottish Agate or Pebble Jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria.When she travelled to the Highlands with Prince Albert she fell in love withthe dramatic landscape and went on to purchase Balmoral, the rest as they sayis history. This love extended to allthings Scottish and when the London papers reported that the couple werewearing “polished pebble brooches made from local stones” it set a trend thatwould last for decades and even spread to Europe.

Written examples of this sweeping fashion are to be seen in the novelwritten by Elizabeth Gaskell in her novel Cranford (1851) set in the Cheshirevillage of Knutsford where one of the characters – Miss Pole was wearing noless than 7 Scottish pebble brooches!
