This stunning Old Cut Paste and Sterling Silver Crescent Brooch dates to the Victorian Period, circa. 1880.

Star and Moon images such as crescents became popular during the late 19th Century as an interest in astronomy grew. They were used in jewellery to symbolise guidance and to help lead you in the direction you are meant to go.

Paste is a type of glass which has been used since the 18th century. During the 18th and early 19th century fine Diamond and precious stone jewellery was often part of the family heirloom therefore they would have replicas made from Paste to safeguard their heritage. They would take their paste jewels to grand functions and to the party season in London where admirers wouldn’t be able to know the difference. This is now why Paste jewellery is still so highly sought after, as it was made with just the same amount of highly skilled craftsmanship as antique fine precious jewellery, so much so that it has become a collector’s item.

This is a sweet little brooch which would make a wonderful conversion project or a great addition to any collection.
