This is a superb big quality antique Victorian dated 1866 sterling silver Scottish agate & Cairngorm citrine Luckenbooth brooch. The stones are in beautiful condition and has a lovely clear diamond registration stamp dating the design to 1866.
The Luckenbooth is an ancient Scottish lovers token where two hearts are merged into one and often have a crown on top to symbolise the crowning of the merger.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The classic stones are quality green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum, orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire and rare gold and green moss agates from Burn Anne in Ayrshire. The top three small cabochons are champagne citrines from the Cairngorm mountain range and the central facetted stone is a fabulous brandy citrine also from the Cairngorm mountain range. These stones have been fully tested by a local jeweller to confirm they are genuine citrines.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver.The brooch does have a diamond registration mark on the back which registers the piece to the 23rd February 1866. The length is 5.0 cm ( Two inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
