Antique Mettlach Beer Stein

NEAR MINT CONDITION

I have collected beer steins and glasses for 50 years. Now it is time todownsize a bit, so here is an antique Mettlach beer stein for sports lovers.

This is one of five or six different Turnverein (Gymnastics Club) steins manufactured by Mettlach. Ithas applied relief figures of six men engaged in various sporting activitiesand one man holding a Flag and 4F shield.

The Turnverein movement, also called the “Turners” or 4F movement, wascomprised of gymnastics clubs all over Germany. Their Turnfests (GymnasticsFestivals) were the most popular sports events of the 19th and early20th centuries. Back then, gymnastics included activities likeweight lifting, wrestling and others that are sports in their own right today.The 4F logo stands for their motto Frisch,Fromm, Frohlich, Frei (Fresh, Devout, Happy, Free).

The stein is 1/2 liter capacityand has a deeply recessed base resulting in a stein that is tall and heavy. It stands8¾ inches tall overall (7 inches to the rim) and weighs in at2¾ pounds.

Condition: The stein is in NEARMINT condition. It has no flea bites, chips, hairlines, cracks, crazing,staining or repairs. The lid fits properly, has no dents, and the 5-ring hingeand strap are tight. The interior is clean and white. The only issues are threetiny paint flakes on the base rim anda little nick on the edge of the lid.

Markings: The bottom of thestein is impressed with the traditional incised Mettlach Abbey tower and the“METTLACH (VB)” banner. Also impressed are “GEGENNACHBILDUNG” (against copying), “GESCHŰTZT” (roughly means protected), moldnumber (2278), quality control number (28) and the year code (97 for 1897).

The green Mercurymark is stamped on the bottom along with “Made In Germany”.
