FOR SALE IS THIS VERY COLLECTIBLE AND SOUGHT AFTER ELGIN AMERICAN COMPACT MADE IN THE 1940\'s.

Everything old is new again, with styles from the 20s-60s gracing modern swing dancers and party goers. And carried with them are the requisite vintage accessories… bakelite bangles, lucite purses, and the glittering makeup cases and compacts of yesteryear. It wasn\'t always so. Only \'hussies\' openly used cosmetics until WWI, when women were suddenly called on to replace men in the workforce.

THIS COMPACT HAS THE GOLD ART DECO TYPE DESIGN (MAKING IT LOOK LIKE IT\'S IN MOTION) AND CREAM COLORED ENAMEL AROUND THE TOP. THE MIDDLE HAS A PRETTY ROSE MOTIF WITH A GUILLOCHE* PATTERN AROUND IT.
*Guilloché(orguilloche) is a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitivepatternis mechanicallyengravedinto an underlying material viaengine turning, which uses a machine of the same name, also called arose engine lathe. This mechanical technique improved on more time-consuming designs achieved by hand and allowed for greater delicacy, precision, and closeness of line, as well as greater speed.
THE FRONT OF THE COMPACT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH A SMALL (TINY) SCUFF MARK. THE BACK OF THE COMPACT HAS ONE SMALL SCRATCH IN THE FINISH NEAR THE HINGE.
THE MIRROR ON THE INSIDE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. THERE IS A COMPARTMENT THAT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL ROUGE IN IT. THE COMPARTMENT THAT HOLDS THE POWDER IS MARKED \"ELGIN AMERICAN\"* AND STILL CONTAINS SOME LOOSE POWDER.
*In the 1940\'s, when the watch case business started to run into hard times, the Illinois Watch Case Company branched out into manufacturing cigarette cases and Lady\'s Compacts, using the \"Elgin American\" brand name. In the 1950\'s, all production was moved to Japan, which meant the \"Elgin American\" line was no longer made in America, let alone from Elgin.
