Notable Features:This stunning 14k rose gold bangle bracelet was handmade during the Aesthetic movement of the Art Nouveau era and features Bohemian garnets and seed pearls set in a bypass style design. The petite garnets and seed pearls are mounted in riveted bezel settings and set in a single alternating row nested between the bypass with granulated bead accents. The semi-translucent medium red hue of the Bohemian garnets contrasts beautifully with the lustrous cream hue of the seed pearls. The tubular bracelet was formed using the repousse method of hammering an image from the reverse side and is finished with cube-shaped ends accented with a single seed pearl. The tubular bands bypass one another and are accented with more granulated bead details and asimple scroll on each side. The hinged bangle is finished with a push in clasp and delicate cable link safety chain. The entire design comes together in a beautiful antique piece, which evokes the refined subtle tastes of the Aesthetic movement. The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French, which translates to \"A Beautiful Time.” This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first world war, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry.
The Aesthetic period, 1885 – 1901, features simple jewelry designs and refined artistic taste. Jewelry designers moved to using soft curves and natural shapes and subtle coloring. This period came as a response to Victorians becoming disillusioned with previous jewelry periods that featured more elaborate designs in fashions and furnishings.
Repoussé began as an ancient metal working technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
Bohemian Garnet is transparent or translucent mineral of a dark red hue. Bohemian Garnets were mined starting in the 16th century in the Bohemian Hills of Czechoslovakia. During the Victorian and Art Deco eras, this type of garnet reached a height of popularity. There are no known mines in existence today, which has made the remaining stones highly coveted.
Seed pearls occur naturally and are used most often as a decorative border, as tiny accents in small patterns, or in larger clusters woven together to make up an entire piece of jewelry.
