Notable Features:This bracelet was handmade during the Art Deco era. The bracelet is made out of 14k yellow gold and features graduated Momo coral stones. Each stone has been carved in high relief with a cameo of an ancient Greco-Roman woman. Cameo carvings have a long history dating back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans and were very popular during the Art Deco era following the discovery of ancient Etruscan sites outside of Rome a century earlier. Inspired by the styles of jewelry found at these sites, jewelers began to incorporate Etruscan designs and techniques into their own work, resulting in gorgeous pieces like this bracelet.
The Momo coral in this bracelet has a natural deep orange hue and would have been imported from China before being carved entirely by hand, polished, and set in this bracelet. The stones are oval in shape and graduate in size, with the largest sitting in the middle and the smallest at either end. On the face of each stone is a cameo of a woman in the traditional style of art from classical antiquity. The women appear in profile, their shoulders only just visible, and their hair piled atop their head in loose, cascading curls. Each Momo coral stone rests in a yellow gold bezel which is surrounded with a rope twist border, another characteristic of ancient Etruscan jewelry. The bezels are linked together with a yellow gold specialty chain, which is completed with a locking push-in clasp for secure and comfortable wear. This bracelet is worn in a riviere style with the backs of the stone resting against the wrist and the cameos facing outward. A fantastic example of Art Deco interpretations of ancient Etruscan jewelry, this bracelet would make a valuable and unique addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don\'t miss your chance to own this piece of cultural history.

The Art Deco era is famous for being the \"Gatsby\" or \"Roaring Twenties\" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand.
Archaeological revival jewelry was inspired by the excavations and discoveries of Roman, Byzantine, Egyptian, and Etruscan sites in the 18th and 19th Centuries. These archaeological digs uncovered beautiful works of decorative arts, giving jewelers a glimpse into the past for inspiration for contemporary designs. Some of the revival styles incorporate the use of filigree and granulation decorations. The revival styles emphasized the contrast between antiquity and modernity, with jewelers of the modern world borrowing motifs and techniques from the ancients, to perfect with advanced technologies and incorporate into modern designs.
Etruscan revival jewelry swept into popularity in the early 1800s with the Victorian era discovery of Etruscan tombs just outside of Rome in Italy. These archaeological digs unearthed beautiful golden jewelry that had been meticulously ornamented with tiny gold beads, featuring flowing geometric shapes, celestial motifs, and a plethora of sacred and Greco-Roman mythological figures. The techniques of repoussé, filigree, and granulation are all attributed to the Etruscans. Jewelers all over the world avidly began to attempt to replicate these ancient techniques, changing the way fine jewelry was made for many years.
Riviere is a style where individually mounted gemstones and glass stones, are attached in rows or strands, creating a continuous and elegant design. Stones are often faceted and set in open back settings, allowing light to reflect throughout the stones. Riviere means “river” in French and refers to the flowing style of this design, much like that of a river. This style gained popularity during the Georgian era and is still very fashionable today.
A cameo is an image that has been carved in raised relief by cutting away the background of different materials to create a contrast in height and color. The earliest examples of cameos date back to the 3rd century BC. In antiquity, this was achieved by carving into a single piece of banded agate to reveal the layers of colors, but now it is much more common that cameos are made of two different materials. The most common form of fine jewelry cameo is created by layering a carved white shell on top of a stone of contrasting color with a flat plane. Cameos usually depict a beautiful or famous person in profile or a mythological figure. The Romans were true artisans when it came to creating these pieces, so there are many Roman cultural influences found in cameos, even to this day. These are true miniature artworks.
Momo corals come from two species found in the Pacific Ocean. Corallium secundum is found primarily off the coast of northern Taiwan. Its color ranges from medium red to orange to soft reddish pink hues and sometimes has a fine white grainy pattern. Corallium eliatus is also found near Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines, and its color ranges from intense red to orange to yellowish pastel hues. Momo coral is one the most popular coral types used in jewelry making.
