Found in France, a rare tall vintage galvanized zinc coal scuttle (hod) in great overall condition for your French country decor. Scuttles were filled with chunks of coal from the shed in the garden and carried indoors to fill the stove in the kitchen for cooking, or to fuel the stove in the main room for heat in the winter. The zinc has a lovely dark patina from age (circa early 1900s). Use by the fireplace to hold kindling wood or to hold umbrellas by the door! Very functional piece. We fill one with twigs and bunches of lavender. Handles for carrying and pouring. Rim on the bottom to keep from rusting. Heavy. Measures 19.5 inches tall overall with a base diameter of 9.5 inches.
