The brooch features an intricate, cast filigree pattern, which is accented by rose cut and Old Mine cut diamonds. The eye clean and sparkly diamonds are foil backed, which enhances their character and naturalbeauty. The filigree design showcases a domed center with six raised lines surrounding a triangular-shaped rose cut diamond, which is bordered by four mine cut diamonds at the top, bottom, and sides of the dome. Eight rose cut diamonds, in domed settings, fan out around the edge of the brooch with filigree lines and granulated bead accents throughout, adding to the elegant quality of this piece. The light patina on the sterling silver complements the sparkling diamonds and adds to the antique quality of this piece. The brooch is finished with a pin stem and locking \"c\" clasp. This brooch would look especially attractive turned long ways and converted into a pendant, which can be easily done by your local jeweler. This incredible brooch would have originally been given as a gift to a bride on her wedding day and it would be perfect for this same purpose today. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The \"c\" clasp and pin stem was added on during the Art Nouveau period, and work well with this piece.

This piece was made during the Georgian era. This era is known for its hand-crafted designs, which were heavily influenced by world exploration. A few signatures of this era were high karat gold, cameos, chatelaine accessories, foil-backed stones, rivière necklaces, memento mori and mourning jewelry, and rose and mine cut diamonds. While the jewelry from this era began to see designs from all over the world, jewelry from abroad was still very expensive to acquire due to sea travel. Between age and difficulty of acquirement, jewelry from the Georgian era are rare finds and amazing pieces of history.
Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia.
Foil backing is a technique used to enhance the beauty of stones. It was most popular during the Georgian (1700s) and Victorian (1800s) eras, until about 1840. Foil backed settings are created using a fully enclosed setting, in which a piece of reflective foil is set inside, and then the stone set on top of the foil. The foil allows light to reflect through the stones and thus enhance its natural character.
Diamond is derived from the Greek word, “adamas”, which means “unbreakable.” Diamonds are extremely rare, with the earliest diamonds being discovered in India around the 4th century BC and being traded along the Silk Road; the trade route between India and China. During the latter half of the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in South Africa. Diamonds are renowned for their strength and brilliance of color and ability to reflect and disperse light. This is what gives them such a brilliant sparkle. Colors range in blue, yellow, brown, green, purple, pink, orange, and red; the less color a diamond has, the higher its grade is. Diamonds range from 1 billion to 3.5 billion years old, and because of their age and qualities, have become the symbol for love across many cultures.
Old Mine Cut diamonds have 58 facets like today’s modern cuts but are distinguished by its squarish shape…. not to be confused with the Old European Cut diamond (precursor to today’s round brilliant cut diamond) which has a round shape. Old mine cut diamonds are most often found in Georgian and Victorian era jewelry. The original old mine cut diamonds of the 19th century was referred to by this name because the jewels came from the old diamond mines in India and Brazil, rather than South Africa, which dominates the diamond industry today. In the 19th century, artisans shaped each mine cut diamond by hand. All diamonds remained hand-cut until the early 1900\'s. Due to the handcraftsmanship, each diamond was unique and no two cuts were identical, unlike today\'s diamonds which undergo machine-assisted cutting processes.
Rose cut diamonds have been made for hundreds of years. They date back to the 1500s but really gained popularity during the 1700s and were used until about 1840 when they were replaced with the Mine cut diamond. Rose cut diamonds are unique in the way that they are one of the last types of stones to feature hand cleaved facets on the stone. These stones are meant to look rough as a stone cutter would hand cleave the facets by cutting the diamond with another diamond. They are highly prized and sought after in today\'s market due to their rarity as most of these stones were lost or re-cut into more modern cuts.
