nice Collectors and Practical CelluloidGlasses Case!

When Celluloid wasfirst commercially manufactured in the 1870s, its greatest virtue was asan imitative material for expensive natural substances that were becomingscarce. The introduction of faux ivory, tortoise shell, coral, amber and jet had a great impact on both society and industry as it made for awide variety of inexpensive and easily manufactured goods that rivaled thegenuine articles at a fraction of the cost. Eventually celluloid gainedacceptance as a waterproof alternative to paper and textile in the manufactureof detachable collars. Furthermore, celluloid sheet was artfullydecorated by lithograph and embossing techniques, then fashioned into some ofthe most fanciful objects of the Victorian and Edwardian Eras: highly desirablephotograph albums and storage boxes. Advertising novelties and pin backbuttons were also popular applications for sheet celluloid and are just ascollectible today as they were 100 years ago.

Perhaps one of themost prolific uses for celluloid was in the manufacture of lightweight, unbreakable dolls and toys for children. Today it is not unusual forsmall holiday themed toys, which were once mass produced and sold for pennies,to command hundreds of dollars as collectibles.Unfortunately the high contentof nitric acid used in the recipe for celluloid rendered it highly inflammableand by the late 1920s modern non-flammable plastics were being developed.
