This is an antique or vintage wooden W. & L.E. GURLEY surveyor transit tripod.

It was patented in 1927, but I\'m not sure how old this actual one is.

It measures exactly 5 feet (60 inches) tall when closed. The head of it measures 5 inches across.

It\'s made of wood, probably oak. The hardware is mostly brass, but I believe the top of it is a very hard white metal.

The covered leg tips are made of black painted steel.

The strap holding the legs together is made of leather. It is stamped with the numbers 236 19.

The outer part of the top is marked:

W. & L.E. GURLEY

TROY, N.Y., U.S.A.

The inner part of the top is marked:

W. & L.E. GURLEY, TROY, N.Y., U.S.A.

If you Google the patent number, you can find a very detailed description of this tripod.

I believe the top piece is supposed to screw off, but it\'s tight and may need some WD-40.

The piece has scattered scuff marks to it, but it\'s not too bad.

Overall, it\'s in very good condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs.

It weighs 11 pounds.
