Please Note: I\'ve shown a couple pictures of the server filled with eighteen (18) large eggs. Wanted to mention these are real eggs and not ceramic, so they\'re not part of the sale...just wanted to give some idea of the capacity of this tureen.
INFO: This yellow ware tureen is an item I\'ve had in my personal collection for over 40 years. The bottom of the dish has a pretty basketweave design, along with different sizes of embossed ivy leaves, and is finished in a great Rockingham glaze. The mold number PV 2277 is impressed into the bottom.
SIZE: Dish with cover is 8\" high (to the top of the tail feathers). Bottom dish is 8-1/4\" long x 6-5/8\" wide and 3-1/4\" high (all measured on the outside). Top measures appx 8-7/8\" long (to the end of the tail feathers) x 5-5/8\" wide. Bottom dish has an inner rim that the lid fits into.
CONDITION: The top lid is in Very Good or better condition. There is one tiny under-the-glaze chip on the rim edge that would have been made during the glazing process. There is also one speck of glaze that has flaked off, located on the inside internal rim, and there is a small hairline (which I\'ve never noticed all these years) located beneath the tail feathers; there are no other nicks, chips or cracks. The glazing on the lid, both outside and inside is beautiful, with no darkening or damage.
The bottom dish has the tiniest nick on the inside of the outside rim and two small chips on the opposite end located on the inside/top of the outside rim; these are not very unnoticeable. Located on the outside and inside rims, directly across from one another are hairline cracks (I\'ve showed these in the photos). The structure has not been compromised, it\'s still very solid with the only damage being visual. Also seen in the photos is the inside bottom of the dish which has areas of darkening in the glaze.
The outside of the bottom dish is embossed with a pretty basketweave design with different sizes of embossed Ivy leaves encircling the dish. The Rockingham glaze is in beautiful condition. The tureen has crazing that\'s ordinarily found on pottery of this age. The bottom of the dish is partially unglazed and has the impressed mold number PV2277.
Overall, this hen-on-nest, with its aged and mellow glazes, makes a lovely display piece.
