For sale is a rare and antique ASHWORTH BROTHERS soup tureen with lid. It is made of glazed tan colored ironstone. It has an octagonal shape and footed base. The print is hand painted in rich orange and rust and cobalt blue. The embossed leaves and edges are trimmed in gold. The lid handle is shaped like a flower surrounded with embossed leaves and buds. The two base handles are shaped as leaves. There is a slot on the side of the lid to place a ladle. SALE DOES NOT INCLUDE A LADLE OR UNDERPLATE.Both the lid and the base are stamped underglaze with the Royal Crown mark and \"Real Stone China\". There is also the pattern code of \"125 W\" hand written in red paint over glaze (only partially visible on the base). This mark was used by Ashworth Brothers circa from 1860. In 1851 Francis Morley purchased the Charles James Mason Ironstone works and moved them to Shelton. The Mason Ironstone factory was bought by the Ashworth\'s in 1859 and consequently moved to Hanley in 1859. The tureen base is approximately 6-1/4 inches (16 cm) tall with the lid off and 10 inches (25 cm) with the lid on. It is approximately 11-1/4 by 9 inches (28.5 by 23 cm) across the top rim and 13-1/2 inches (34 cm) from handle to handle. The capacity is approximately 3-quarts (2.8 L). This is a heavy piece that weighs approximately 7 pounds (3.2 kg). This antique piece is in acceptable used condition. The glaze is shiny and bright. There are a few chips and nicks. The tureen has one chip and one small nick on the inside rim edge (1 by 1/2 inch and 1/8 inch in size, respectively) and one small chip on the outside rim edge (1/4 inch). There is a chip on the underside edge of one of the handles (1/2 by 3/8 inch). The lid has one small nick to the edge (1/8 inch n size). There is some visible crazing and discoloration spots in places. There is a firing flaw on the inside rim edge that created a 1-inch long fissure in the clay. This occurred during manufacturing. Where the handles connect to the base, there are some places where separation occurred during firing. The handles are firmly attached and the fissures are glazed over. Some of these flaws and imperfections are shown in the last four photographs. Please see the photographs. Additional photographs available upon request. This is a spectacular piece that still looks great for being over 150 years old! And while this can still be used as a serving piece for serving soup or other hot or cold liquids, it would also make a great centerpiece, bonsai planter, or even a wine bottle chiller.
