DESCRIPTION

This is an authenticearly 1800\'s wrought iron cooking fork, not a laterreproduction.

Hand wrought blacksmith made and quite heavy for it\'s size. It has doubletines with a hanging curl to the end and an impressive offset handle.

This fork was created from one single piece of wrought iron, carefully crafted at the blacksmiths forge, you can see and feel the handwork. It has a wonderful shape to the handle. Whenlaid flat onto a surface the back of the tines curve upward to the wide handleallowing the cook to easily grasp the fork. The shape of the handle is quite interesting. A broad shaped area just beyond the tines with a round section that flatens out to the end curl. Beautifully Balanced!

These long handled forks were usedat the open hearths before the cooking stove was in general use in homes.They served to toast bread and werealso used for turning meat.

The long handle enabled the cook tostay well away from the heat, flames and sparks of the open fire. Thatwas always a serious consideration especially for women when cooking, theirvoluminous skirts of the time could catch fire so easily, long handled utensilswere an absolute necessity.
