Inthe Puertorrican home, these figures were...an essential of everyday life...and were, and still are, treated as a living part of the household, not as works of art.\"
My mother collected folk and ethnic art through many years of travel, and these were bought at Don Roberto\'s shop in San Juan, Puerto Rico around 1970. A leaflet (excerpted above) is included that suggests the age of the piece as circa 1875. It further notes that the Santeros (carvers) rarely ever signed their work. She bought two - see separate listing for the other one.12.75\" tall x approx 4\" at widestCondition: This antique is obviously aged, which adds to its rustic charm. The paint is mostly worn off, there\'s a vertical surface crack in the back, and one of the hands is broken. As the leaflet notes, \"Old Santos often have missing parts. Hands, staffs.....(parts of which were carved separately and pegged into the main figure) are often missing or replaced.\"
