Description: Up for sale is this very nice find: original period cast bronze sculpture by renowned American sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward or JQA Ward. I will guarantee that this is a period bronze and not a modern reproduction. I was retrieved from an antique store in New York City and had been a part of that shop\'s inventory for many years. Mr. Ward was one of the premier American sculptors of the post Civil war years leading up to the 20th century. He created many public monuments. To list a few:The pediment above the New York Stock ExchangeThe Pilgrim in Central Park in NYCStatue of George Washington at Federal Hall NYCGeneral John F. Reynolds at GettysburgJames A. Garfield monument in Washington DCThis is but a partial list of his achievements. If you do a quick search on the net you will find a complete list of his work. His smaller bronzes do not come to market often and continue to rise in value. In addition to his work as an artist he was a leader in art movement that flourished in America in the late 19th century. He was a founder and president of the National Sculpture Society (1893–1905), president of the National Academy of Design (1874), and a member of the Fine Arts Federation, the Architectural League, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The American Institute of Architects, the National Arts Club, and the Century Association. He sat on the Advisory Committee of Fine Arts of the City of New York at the World\'s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and on the Advisory Committee of Sculptors at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. He was one of the original members of the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and served on its Executive Committee until 1901. From this list it is clear that he was well respected and sought after in his day. This sculpture if of Mr. Henry B. Hyde (1834-1899) founder and president of the Equitable Life Insurance Society. At the time of Mr. Hyde\'s death this was the largest insurance company in the world. It was very common at this point in history for artists to create commissioned work for wealthy clients. This work is just such a work. Mr. Hyde is represented standing straight and tall in a business suit. He has an overcoat and a pair of gloves in his right hand (obviously posed in winter). Ward has captured a very strong and impressive personality that one can understand was the driving force behind his business. In this vein it would make a great gift for your favorite executive.Casting is very well done with a beautiful aged patina. Front of the base has the patron\'s name and business. On the left side of the base signed JOA Ward (note O instead of Q). The back is signed with the founders name and location: Henry-Bonnard Foundry NY and dated 1900. Casting is very heavy weighing 24 pounds. All said a very nice sculpture from a well renowned American artist depicting an executive of great standing shortly after his death.
