Egg tempera on wood, gold leaf, gesso, varnish .Age : mid-second half of 19th centuryProvenance : Greece, mainland, probably Northern GreeceDimentions: 23x20 cmThis is a very rare antique Greek icon of the Nativity of Christ dated in the mid- second half19th century. The icon has not been cleaned or restored, it is original as I bought it and it stil has the original old yellow oxidised varnish that gives a very nice value on the icon.It is painted by egg - tempera on wood, probably pine wood and it depicts the scene of the Nativity of Christ, the background is blue and the halos are guilt by gold leaf. It is a typical icon from Northern or central Greece 19th century, with very vivid colors and an optimistic happy style, typical of this icon school of 19th century, instead of the previous years icons of the Nativity which had more byzantine and conservative medieval expression.
It is a very nice Greek icon belonging to the school of 19th century and it is generally very well preserved.You can ask me extra photos or information by e-mail.
