A 19th century two gallon blue decorated stoneware crock by Jas. Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA. It measures just shy of 12\" tall and the top is just over 7\" wide. There are three hairlines. One extends from side just over 3\" inward on the bottom of the piece; it continues up the side and to the right about 6\". It meets a second hairline which extends almost 3\" to the left. Thefinal hairline is smaller and begins on the bottom of the piece,extending from the side about 2\" inward on the bottom and continues about 2\" upwardand to the left on the side. There is also what I would consider a stress fracture on the bottom, more of aserration than a crack and does not damage the integrity of the piece. As to the rim, there are three inner rim chips, the largest of which measures about 3/4\" in width; the others are about 1/2\" and 1/4\". Also a tiny chip on the underside of the rim about 1/4\". There are other minor imperfections, dings, a possible surface chip right underneath the \"2\" - minor issues which may or may not haveoccurred in manufacturing. Though the flaws are there, they are mentioned only for accuracy and to be thorough - this crock displays very nicely and none of the hairlines are visible when viewing it head on. The blue stenciling and decoration is well preserved and attractive and it would be a great addition to a stoneware collection.
