Borodino battle-the largest battle of the Patrioticwar of 1812 between the Russian army under the command of General Kutuzov andthe French army under the command of Emperor Napoleon I Bonaparte. It tookplace on August 26, 1812 near Borodino village, 125 km West of Moscow.

Count Tolstoy Fyodor Petrovich(February 21, 1783 — April 25, 1873) was a Russian painter, draftsman, medalistand sculptor, representative of late classicism, Vice - President of the ImperialAcademy of arts.

Medallions Tolstoy created inthe spirit of classicism, after the victory in the Patriotic war of 1812 withallegorical scenes on the themes of the war of 1812 and foreign campaigns ofthe Russian army in 1813-1814 the Series was launched in 1814, and completed in1836. The work on the medallions lasted more than 20 years, and not on thestate order, but on its own initiative.

Count Fedor Petrovich Tolstoyfirst made the figure and then sculpted the relief, in pink wax on black slateslate boards. The originals are kept in the sculpture Department of the RussianMuseum. It is believed that this is the best work of Russian medal art of theXIX century.
