Gorgeous copy of an extremely rare and important book. Soft cover

Issues: Owner name on front cover (W.J. Kostir a well known zoologist in Ohio). Soiling to covers and some minor paper loss to bottom edge of spine cover (last photo), as well as two bits of corner loss on rear cover. Midway down on long edge of pages from page 73 to rear cover there is a small page nick that begins at nothing on page 73 and gets as long as 3/8 inch at rear cover. Only last three leaves have a 1/4\" or longer length in this nick. Page toning and no other issues noted.

This book very much impressed Charles Darwin: In the Origin of Species (first edition, pp. 190-92), Darwin discussed what is called \"change of function\" to explain the evolution of evolutionary novelties. Dohrn\'s \"Functionswechsel\", as presented in the monograph offered here, is an elaboration of Darwin\'s idea. On May 24, 1875, Darwin wrote to Dohrn: \"I am very much obliged for the present of the \'Ursprung &c.\' I have read the whole, as far as my shameful ignorance of German has permitted me. It has interested me extremely, & astonished me not a little. Your views seem very ingenious, but I have not knowledge enough of comparative anatomy to form a judgement of any value. . . . I have for a long time seen the full importance of the principle of Functionswechsel; though I never enunciated it as a distinct principle\" (Charles Darwin Anton Dohrn Correspondence, edited by Christiane Groeben, p. 63).

Dohrn is known for his zoological stations, creating the first zoological research station in the world. Dohrn\'s name has been immortalised in an undersea feature, the Anton Dohrn Seamount, a seamount in the Rockall Trough, to the north-west of the British Isles, which has become known for the great biodiversity which lives on the cold-water coral, Lophelia pertusa, in this region.
