This specimen is from the Chinle formation in northEastern Arizona, an area famous for its varied and brilliantly colored petrified wood. It dates back to the Triassic era and is of the extinct species of tree, araucarioxylon Arizonicum. The different colors are due to the different minerals present during the petrification process.It weighs about1 lb.2.25 oz. and measures about 5\" x 5\" x 3/8\".This piece has bright color in a rather unusual pattern.
