Offered here is an fascinating document from the Civil War that gives a view into the logistical requirements of a Civil War field army. This circular was among an archive of documents from the Brigade staff of the3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac. Circulars such as these were printed and distributed to the various commands as a way of spreading official information to the troops. This one, General Orders No. 16, appears under a decorative \"Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac\" header and is dated February 26, 1863.The single-page circular names two Lieutenants in the 28th New Jersey Volunteers whom General Hooker \"dismissed with disgrace from the military service of the United States...for want of fidelity to the government they pretend to serve and have sworn to support.\"
The circular measures 5 1/2\" x 8\" and has two holes in the left margin used for placing the document in a binder. The paper is in excellent sturdy condition, not stiff, and not particularly delicate. Slight wear to corners and edges, most noticeably along the right edge.
This document was purchased from the estate of the late Norm Flayderman, who is well known as having been the authority on Antique American firearms.
