Art Nouveau French St Christopher medal signed Becker, Penin, car, plane,1920s:
$16.30
Beautiful silvered French medal showing a struggling Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, carrying a cherubic Jesus across the river. Around the edge is \"St Christophe P.N.\" (Saint Christopher protect us). The reverse features an old 1920s-style car with two people in it, a bending tree, a train going over a bridge and a tiny plane in the sky.
The medal is marked both BECKER and AP. Edmond Henri Becker (born 1871) was a Frenchmedallist, jeweller, engraver and sculptor who worked through both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. He was a member of theSociete desartistes francais and gained a first class medal in 1911. It is also marked AP which I believe is Adolphe Penin, another famous French medallist.
Adolphe Penin, (1888-1985) who came from 4 generations of Lyon engraversand trained at the Ecole NationaleSupérieuredes Beaux-Arts in Paris, was the grandson of Ludovic Penin (1830 -1868). His signature is a conjoined AP. There is also a raised square poincon on the bail with a mark which is difficult to decipher - probably the foundry mark.
The height of medal including bail is 2.2 cm (3/4 inch), weight 4.0 gm. Lovely gift for someone dear to you or to take on your own travels.
