Antique Asian Black Glazed Cup

Ancestor or Buddhist Temple Offering Cup

Japanese (?)

This RARE Asian, Black Ceramic Pottery Offering Cup was likely made in Japan or perhaps China. It is being relisted as the previous buyer thought it was made in Japan and not China. I am not that familiar with antique, Japanese stoneware, so I\'ve relisted this offering cup as being made in Japan and not China. My apologizes for any confusion this caused.

his black-ware, glazed Stem Cup is in Good condition for being several hundred years old, but it does show tiny surface scratches from use and centuries of burial have etched what appears to be authentic dendrite crystal grow under the glaze--a definitive proof of its age. It is in \"as found\" condition with no repairs, or restorations. It does show clear signs of heavy calcification and mineral deposits from being buried.

In ancient China & Japan, ancestral worship was the predominant form of religion.Elaborate bronze and pottery dishes such as this piece, filled with food and wine, were set outevery tenth day in a form of communal banquet for the ancestors to come andshare with their living descendants. By honouring ones ancestors in thisfashion, the ancient Chinese and Japanese gained both power and protection againstmalevolent spirits, which were thought to be ever present.

This stemmed Offering Cup is about 4.2\" or 107 mm in diameter at the mouth and narrows down to just 1.4\" or 36 mm at the footed, ringed base.

This cup measures about 2.27\" or 58 mm tall and weighs approximately 6.8 oz or 194 grams.

This bowl has a lovely sky-blue or turquoise patina from the minerals in the soil that have leached into the semi-porous pottery. The underside of the cup is especially stunning!! (see photos!)

DETAILS

This antique, stoneware Offering Cup once held offerings of freshly collected dew or perhaps wine. Offerings would have been presented in this lovely stemmed cup to honor departed ancestors, deities, or in Buddhist ceremonies.

This small Offering Cup is RARE and would be perfect for your pottery collection!

The cup has robustly thick walls and shows clear signs of heavy use and burial with tiny scratches and very light, authentic crazing of the glaze. The unglazed foot shows spiral rings from the potter\'s wheel and earthen deposits from burial. As found with no repairs. Please see photos for details as they are part of the description. Thank You!

Theunderside of the small-footed base is unglazed and unmarked, as is period correct. (see photo # 6-8) It has tiny circles still visible from the ancient potter\'s wheel that it was created on.
