Description: This sale is for a beautifully embroidered antiqueRussian or Ukrainian tunic* orshirt. When I first acquired this, it had a note pinned on it that said: Pinnedto the tunic was an old note which read: ?Grandfather\'s clothing brought fromRussia - 1800\'s.? The original note was sent with a beaded cap I sold last yearto a gentleman in Dubai. I am trying to locate him so he could perhaps copy thenote for me. Included with the tunic and cap was an embroidered red silk pillowsquare, opulently embroidered with gold thread. I will list this separately.This beautiful, museum-quality example of an antique Russian or Ukrainian tunicis made of medium-weight, hand woven beige linen which slides through yourfingers like water! This tunic would truly be comfortable to wear! It has long,set-on sleeves, gathered at a set-on cuff. The band cuff has an edge of carefullystained medium-green coloring and black zig-zag embroidery. The cuffs areclosed by a loop at the edge of one side of the cuff; the opposite side of thecuff has a small, dense green-stained cloth ?ball? that slips into the opposingloop. The rounded neckline has the same decorative green stain along with zig-zagembroidery. At the center of the bodice is a gorgeous vertically-placed ethnicdesign in bright, vibrant colors: blue, green, orange, yellow and black. Thedesign has triangular designs within it, which I have research to be a man?sdesign. The hem of the shirt carries this design, as well. It is truly gorgeousto see. The same triangular designs are found at the center, although they runhorizontally. Below the horizontal design is another design of triangles inyellow, blue, green, and orange. This design runs the circumference of thetunic. The last three (3) inches of the bottom of the tunic is stained the samegreen as the collar and cuffs. The back of the tunic is unadorned, but for thehemline designs. There are belt loops at the waist (no belt was included),along with darts that run both front and back. This is an absolutely stunningexample of the attire of immigrating Russians or Ukrainians, and is truly amuseum-quality piece!

*These shirts are known as a kosovorotka, or traditionalRussian shirts. They have long sleeves and a length up to mid-thigh. Thekosovorotka shirt may have some buttons only on the collar, and is usuallyclosed to protect the body from any damages or insects. Traditionallykosovorotka was worn in the country. This type of shirt was the main clothingfor men for any occasion of their life.

ConditionReport: Excellent. There is lightsoiling in places, and a spot near the top at the back of the tunic. At therear hem edge there is a small place where there is Length, center frontcollar to hem 39 inches; Length, center back collar to hem 42 inches; Length,top shoulder seam to cuff 21-1/2 inches; Length, underarm seam to cuff 16-1/2inches; Cuff circumference (buttoned) 6-1/4 inches; Natural waist circumference,belt loop area 47 inches; Hem circumference 54 inches.
