Do you love antique doll clothing for your French Fashion doll? I have been collecting clothing and attempting to restore what I can for a long time. This lovely walking suit has 3 pieces...a bodice, an underskirt and an overskirt. Fashioned of what was probably a dark cranberry or mulberry brown silk striped with antique white or gold,this ensemble merits further restoration and a beautiful doll to wear it!
The colors have gently faded with time, although if you look under the ruffle of the skirt you can see the rich hues. Not severe fading, but, you can identify that the original color was more red than brown, and both hues are present throughout.The jacket is trimmed with antique lace at the neckline, and at the wrist of the sleeves.Fancy ruching runs down the front of the bodice and accents the wrist. Severe wear on the upper sleeve was partially repaired on one, but could be improved. Tailored cording is visible at the shoulder bodice seam and at the jacket hem. Fancy bow trim accents the front of the bodice and hook and eye closure remains.The lining is typical brown polished cotton.The silk underskirt is made up of brown polished cotton with a silk bottom. The skirt closes with hook and eye. IT too, has witnessed the ravages that time has inflicted upon elegant fine silk and shows a tear in the bottom pleated ruffle. Please see photos as they show measurements. The overskirt is all silk, no lining and has an interesting black tie to create a bustle effect. Seams have come out and need reinforcement. The photo of the overskirt shows the original color the best--how lovely! It has fancy bow trim and ruching as well as fluted hem. What style!My thoughts when I took this elegant walking suit in years ago, was to restore it. I have a few ideas for the doll costumer, or lover of antique clothing history, who will be the next caretaker of this piece of history. Black lace can be placed over the shattered areas on the shoulders. Or, another thought is to create a black silk or lace shawl(easily done with a triangle of fabric, and some overcast stitches.) to cover the areas of concern on the bodice. I think it is lovely as is, and just a shawl to cover the shoulders would disguise the older repair and the shattered silk.Please review the photos before you offer.
Length of jacket from lace to hem measured in the back....6 3/4 inches
Around shoulder, measured flat across from top of shoulder to underarm...2 inches.
Wrist, measured flat across...1 1/2 inches
Waist of skirt ...about 8 inches
Length of skirt...9 1/4 in front, 9 1/2 inches in back.
As to what size doll this would fit, it\'s hard to speculate as all fashion bodies are a bit different.
I am hoping that this ensemble will \"speak\" to someone out there in land, and make it beautiful once again. Many collectors prefer an antique gown over a new or reproduction one, so, perhaps this one is for you! Thank you.
