* The Ghost dance was initiated bya Native American shaman named Wovoka, who was a member of the Paiute Tribe.Like other Native American dances, it served many spiritual purposes as well as bring the Native American community together. The Ghost dance was part of his movement to help Plains Indian Tribes try torecover and heal from the many problems and changes they faced from the whiteman in the second half of the 1800\'s. The Ghost Dance is a circle dance that focused on embracing the ways of the past and rejecting some of the negative influences of white people in a peaceful way. This included creating a connection to the earth as well as to ancestors or the dead and trying to end the mourning of those that have more recently passed, through dancing and singing of prayers. It quickly spread throughout many Native American tribes and the gatherings brought many tribes together in one place. The ceremonial Ghost Shirts were usually decorated with elements that represented Nature\'s connection to the people. Unfortunately, the large gathering of the Indian tribes at these Ghost Dances alarmed the whiteman\'s government at the time in the 1880\'s and rumors of a Native uprising caused the government to send troops to disburse the gatherings, usually in a violent way.Somehow the belief evolved that the Ghost Shirts would become bullet-proof and the Indian warriors would wear them into battles with the US Cavalry, with disastrous results! Many battles ended up with massacres of the Native Americans. The Ghost Shirts therefore developed a negativeconnotation to it because of this misguided belief. In today\'s time, the Ghost Shirt has been modernized into beautiful displays of artworkusually embellished withintricate beadwork, fringes and other elements. The Ghost Dance is still practiced today in privateNative American ceremonies. Its symbolismportrays a strong belief inthe need for healing of the earth and mankind.*
