HISTORY

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 7 November 1968. A goldcolor metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overallconsisting of a square white cushion placed diagonally, having curved sidesedged with gold cord and a gold tassel at each corner and on the cushion a redsaltire with a red heart over it, that part of the saltire crossing the heartin white; encircling the cushion a maroon scroll bearing in gold letters thewords \"WE SERVE\" on the left and \"THE REST\" on the right ofthe lower tassel. The colors white and maroon are for the Medical Department.The white cushion symbolizes hospital care and rest and the gold cord andtassels denote the quality of service and care provided. The Hospital\'s locationin Alabama is indicated by the scarlet saltire adapted from the state\'s Flag,and the heart, a symbol of strength and vitality also alludes to Alabama\'ssobriquet \"The Heart of Dixie.\"
