By 1940, the war
had caused four of its five factories to be destroyed however the company
remained in operation. Rationing and
shortages of metal during this time caused production to slow. Business picked
up in the years to come until the 1980’s when compacts slowly went out of
fashion and demand declined. Stratton
was sold numerous times however the company is still in operation in
Birmingham, although on a much smaller scale. The Stratton heritage and quality
still remains today.
Stratton compacts
reveal the fascinating history of the 20th century cosmetics industry. The peak
of powder makeup was in the 1950’s-60’s after the war. Women wanted to look
more feminine and makeup was becoming increasingly acceptable in society. By
the 1970’s, women wanted to look more natural so compacts grew less popular.
