B\'Ham 1891 VICTORIA GOLDEN JUBILEE 1887 COIN Horseshoe LUCKY WATCH FOB Enameled:
$12.55

A lovely antique sterling silver coin fob for a watch, fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1891 and the maker\'s initials \'JC\'. The fob has a pretty openwork scrolling leaf pattern with a lucky horseshoe at the top, holding a round silver mount which is set with a coin, covered on either side with glass. The round silver mount has crimped slightly around the edge- one side more than the other- because it\'s slightly too large to hold the coin and the glass- see photos for this. Inside, the coin is gilded on the \'heads\' side and enameled in bright colours on the \'tails\' side- nocely done, with the head of Victoria and the date is for 1887- the Golden Jubilee year. I think the year was chosen on purpose, and the fob was made a few years later to commemorate the jubilee. The coin has turned around inside its setting, so it\'s at the wrong angle- when it was made the head of the Queen would have been in line with the horseshoe above. In nice condition otherwise, plenty of tarnish to the silver but this would polish out and the hallmarks are clear. Approx. 35mm total drop and 30mm wide, the coin itself is 23-4mm across- possibly a shilling, so it would be real silver but I\'m not sure as I can\'t take it out! A lovely piece, fine as it is but if you could take it apart and clean it up it could be improved. Please see all photos.
