BEAUTIFUL 1904 WORLD\'S FAIR MECHANICAL \"SHADOW-BOX\" SOUVENIRCARD - EXTREMELY RARE

BEAUTIFUL 1904 WORLD\'S FAIR MECHANICAL \"SHADOW-BOX\"SOUVENIR CARD - EXTREMELY RARE

It is not often you can say a World\'s Fair item is \"rare\", 20million people visited the St. Louis 1904 World\'s Fair and if everyone tookhome one souvenir........well you get the idea. But in this case, I believe the scarcity of this item and its beauty speaksfor itself. Post card collectors knowthat Samuel Cupples, a St. Louis Company, was the officialstationer for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. They produced many series of post cards, featuring the Palaces, the Pike, day views, night views, all wonderfulrepresentations of the sights visitors saw at the Fair.

The Full color hold-to-light cards were among the most desired produced by Cupples, additionally, the oversize cards also were amongthe \"special\" cards offered. They also produced a few novelty mechancial cardsand I use that term with real reverence; if you are lucky you may own one ofthe scenic Lagoon postcards, just like the HTL view of the Lagoon & bridgearea of the Fair, only the lovely gondola \"floats: across the mechanical cardas you open it. (twodifferent cards to this set). To my knowledge, noother card manufacturer produced a \"mechanical\" from this Fair. with the exception being a honeycomb fan card that opens, rather contrived.

Then we have this card........it is not actually a postcard. It is a composite view of the beautifulLagoon waterway scene at the Fair, but rather than it being a postcard, it is aspecial, mechanical, SHADOW BOX, that opens to a 3-D effect of the scene as thevisitors would see beyond the Lagoon to the bridge over the water and a view ofthe Palace of Educationjust beyond.

That this card survived in excellent condition is a marvel all these 114years in itself is a wonder, but this souvenir beats many and is far and awaythe peak of paper memorabilia from the Fair!

This card is the same size as a standard-sized postcard, 5-1/4\" by3-1/2\", and opens to about 8-1/2\" wide when fully opened. Hopefully the scans do justice to this rarecard. Own the best! Perfection!
