The Japanese art of SATSUMA goes back to the 17th century to southern Japan where the Prince of Satsuma set up an Urn to make vessels out of the local white clay. This new wear carried on with the Satsuma name. By the end of the 18th century the wares evolved into overglaze painting and heavy and gold decoration, The finer the decoration and complexity of design became more desirable as the wares were exported to the west.

Presented here is a wonderful Satsuma vase with fine hand painting and heavy use of gold. The vase isin excellent condition with no chips or cracks or repairs.The hand painting is fine, a sign of high quality Satsuma. The vase waswell signedby the artist and it has the circle + sign of the Satsuma Provence.It wasproduced in the MENJI PERIOD c. 1890.It stands5\" tall andis 4\" in diameter at the widest point.
