Description& Condition: Antique engraved map, hand colored, size: 486x 576 mm or 19.1 by 22.7 inches, folded as issued, on heavy thickpaper. German text on verso. Some light foxing and spotting. Fulloriginal margins. Very good condition. A marvelous map of Japan,China, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailandia, New Guinea,Oceania, Southeast Asia, and part of Australia. This exceptionallydetail map show centers on the East Indies during a time of heavytrade between European nations and the indigenous people of the landsshown. The most active was the Dutch East India Company. With such aninterest in this portion of the world at the time, there was greatcompetition between the Dutch map makers, namely the Blaeu andHondius/Jansson companies to produce the best maps of the area. Thismap shows everything that was known and most accurately speculated ofthe East Indies during the mid-17th century. The map shows the Dutchdiscoveries in Australia on both Cape York Peninsula and on the westcoast of Australia. Willem Blaeu was Hydrographer to the Dutch EastIndia Company (V.O.C.), and as such, was the first to receiveinformation about new discoveries made by Dutch traders in the EastIndies. The map is decorated with a titlecartouche, dedication cartouche and the coat-of-arms of Theodore Basdirector of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), scale cartouche,several sailing ships, and two compass roses. This map, with itsexcellent original color and clear and precise detail is a premierexample of the Blaeu output. The photos are very accurate, so pleasereview carefully.
Author/Cartographer:Willem (Guilielmus) Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), is theprogenitor of the famous Blaeu cartographic firm of Amsterdam. Blaeustudied astronomy and sciences with Tycho Brahe, and in 1599established a globe and instrument making business which soonexpanded to include cartographic and geographic publishing. This firmwas to go on to become the largest and most important cartographicpublishing firms in the world, run by his sons Cornelis (until hisdeath in 1642) and Joan. The maps issued by the Blaeu firm are knownfor their fine craftsmanship and design, and have been called “thehighest expression of Dutch cartographical art.”
