Rich and beautifully sculpted 19th Century Swedish Blyberg Porphyry urn made into a lamp probably in the 1940/50\'s. Blyberg Porphyry was mined only in Alvdalen, Sweden. The mines were eventually appropriated by royalty under King Gustav III, and the resulting product often given or awarded by the crown as diplomatic gifts and favors, as well as its use in commissioned art and architectural pieces. The urn pictured here is of classic dimensions of early 19th century specimens. I have used flash photography to highlight the intense and varied striation of the stone\'s grain--it\'s deep blood crimson hue is truly amazing. The porphyry portion of this lamp measures 13.5\" tall, approximately, and about 6\" at its widest. The porphyry plinth base measures about 4.25\" square. There is some minor damage to the urn, which is probably why it was made into a lamp about 70 years ago. The plinth has some extremely minor wear at the corners, and the socle that sits upon it has been mended for a clean horizontal break(both pictured). The cap at the top of the urn has a fractured edge portion missing(pictured), but from what I can see, the body and neck are sound and solid. The entire lamp weighs about 18 lbs., and measures 27.5\" from the wooden base to the top of the harp\'s finial. This would make an impressive decorating piece if matched with an appropriate shade, or a wonderful restoration project of the urn alone, if fitted with gilt ormolu trim, as it may have been at one time in its history.
