I had always hoped to find time to do whatever is needed for the cuckoo on this clock but I simply do not have the time any longer...wish I did since it is gorgeous on wall and keeps great time! It acts like it wants to cuckoo, opens the wooden door on top and the bird is present but it stops short of making the sound. The cuckoo sounds work just fine when worked manually; undoubtedly needs an adjustment. It is a truly remarkable clock, beautifully made, deeply hand carved, and has a rare three bird case. The clock was created in the Black Forest of Germany about 90 years ago! It is truly a beautiful clock with a stunning natural finish and a wonderful patina! The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood and adorned in front with five, large, deeply hand carved grape leaves and two equally impressive smaller leaves just above the birds on the lower frame. Another grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. There is a large, very impressive, carved wooden bird on either side of the dial staring upward at a larger, equally nice carved bird atop the clock, looking as though he\'s ready to take flight. The top is a separate piece and secured to the clock case with the old hook and eye system. The clock is just stunning and the ideal size too measuring about 14\" (not counting the chains or pendulum), about 6\" at its deepest point, and about 9 1/2\" at its widest point. The wooden dial has a black backdrop on the chapter ring and features raised whiteRoman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out thetime. There are hinged wooden access doors on each side of the clock and each is secured with a metal brass latch. The doors are quite secure yet open easily to allow access to the mechanical movement from these angles in case adjustments are even needed. The clock has a wooden back that is secured with a large metal latch. It removes to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, early rack style movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need tobe pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too! When working properly, it will work as thus: Atthe bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small, ornately-designed door above the wooden dialand stands in the doorway. He gives off a single, deep cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case before retreating back inside theclock, closing the door behind him. The wooden bird reappears at the top of eachhour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreatingto the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock worksquite well here and keeps good time too. We don\'t know the service history but the movement looks to have had regular service though there is no record of this. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service will be necessary once the clock arrives atits new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service theirantique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so willpreserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. Theclock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a large deeply carved woodengrape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights.I\'ve looked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any missingpieces or damage. I did find a nicely done old repair on the upper part of the lower frame trim and another, hard to see old repair to the lower right side; not at all detracting. I doubt if anything could! It is a very impressive old clock and an excellent example of the greatness of Black Forestworkmanship. It will certainly capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, rare, antique German timepiece with a real history behind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will love this clock!
